Impounded/Stray Animals

Tenterfield Shire Council will collect and hold stray animals

  • Council's Rangers will collect stray animals during the hours of 7:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday
  • An on-call service also operates for after hours collection of stray animals, please contact Council's Ranger on 0411 862 531

Animals that have been captured are held for the following legislative periods, before being destroyed or re-homed.

  • Identified Dogs/Cats - 14 days

  • Unidentified Dogs/Cats - 7 days

  • Livestock - 14 days then sold by public auction

A person who impounds or captures a dog under the Act must contact Council's Ranger or Council. Council's Ranger will come and collect the dog.  Any person who seizes a dog and does not notify Council is guilty of failure to take a seized dog to the owner or Council pound.  Failure to comply warrants a fine of $440.00.

If you find a dog it is your responsibility to notify Council and attempt to locate the owner of the dog.

Should you find livestock roaming free or in a dangerous place please contact Council's Ranger or Council and an officer will help you assess the situation.
