Bruxner Park showcased its excellent acoustics on Thursday morning, 7 March 2019 as the visiting Original Bavarian Brassband of the Allgaeu Region brought their wonderful music to the community of Tenterfield at the Civic Welcome, hosted by Tenterfield Shire Council Mayor, Cr Peter Petty.
For the past twenty years, the Brassband, comprising many different members on each occasion, has visited Tenterfield on a biennial basis, this being their tenth visit.
The Civic Welcome has its roots in the signing of the Sister City Partnership Deed by then Mayor, Cr Lucy Sullivan in Ottobeuren on 5 October 2002.
The Welcome to Country was given by Helen Duroux who was thrilled that the visitors were given the opportunity to hear a translation in German by Council staff member Erika Bursford.
In attendance was The Hon Barnaby Joyce MP who welcomed the members of the Brassband and their support crew to Tenterfield.
In his speech, Mayor Petty gave a special thankyou to Mr Reinhard Lohr (or Popeye) who was making his sixth visit to Tenterfield, and is the organizer in Germany, responsible for getting the thirty one members together and co-ordinating the visit.
He also thanked the Tenterfield Rotary Club for their ongoing commitment in bringing the Band to Tenterfield and the many wonderful events organized and managed by their members, including the Beerfest on Saturday evening.
Gifts were exchanged with a framed photograph of Tenterfield Town, taken by local photographer Peter Reid, being presented for return to Ottobeuren as a token of the ongoing relationship. In addition, each Band member was given a presentation box containing an 8” boomerang depicting a kangaroo.
“The boomerang was chosen as it signifies return, as it is hoped the Band will return to Tenterfield again, as they have returned many times”, said Mayor Peter Petty.
At the conclusion of the event in Bruxner Park, Band members and their hosts were invited to a smorgasbord luncheon in the Sir Henry Parkes Memorial School of Arts.
