Protected: Arborist Tree Assessment Reports

In 2025, Council engaged a qualified arborist to assess the health, safety and condition of trees located in Logan Street, Clarence Street, Cowper Street and Casino Road (Bruxner Highway). The assessment of 203 trees was recently completed, with the following reports to Council.

These assessments help inform decisions that balance community safety, as well as the environmental, social and cultural value of our trees, while supporting the long-term health of Tenterfield’s leafy canopy.

Assessments are undertaken in alignment with the Arbor Analytics Australia – Assessment Rationale, Methodology and Glossary.

What do arborist reports look at?

Arborists assess a range of factors, including:

Tree health and vitality
Structural condition (including roots, trunk and canopy)
Signs of disease, decay or pest activity
Risk to people, property and infrastructure
Expected lifespan and future growth

Not all issues are visible from the outside. Some trees may appear healthy but have underlying structural weaknesses or disease.

How are recommendations made?

Each tree is assessed based on its individual condition and location. Recommendations may include:

Monitoring – ongoing observation over time
Maintenance – pruning or other works to improve safety or health
Restricted access – temporary measures where needed
Removal – only when a tree is no longer safe or viable

Tree removal is always a last resort.

Why are trees recommended for removal?

We understand that tree removal can be concerning for the community. In some cases, removal is recommended when:

A tree is structurally unstable or poses a safety risk
Disease or decay is advanced and irreversible
The tree is unlikely to recover or has reached the end of its safe life
There is a risk of failure that cannot be managed through pruning or other treatments

Where possible, Council is committed to replacement planting and opportunities to maintain canopy cover.

Tree health issues in our region

Some of the conditions identified in recent assessments include naturally occurring diseases such as:

Soil-borne root diseases that prevent trees from taking up water and nutrients
Fungal infections that cause root decay or internal trunk weakening

These conditions are often difficult to detect early and, in many cases, cannot be treated once established.
