Protected: Tree Management – Community Information Hub
Caring for Our Canopy
Tenterfield is famous for its leafy avenues, and Council is committed to preserving the unique character of our town.
In 2025, ollowing community feedback on Council’s Tree Management Plan, Council engaged an independent expert arborist who recently completed 203 health assessments across the township.
The majority of trees are recommended to be retained, treated, and monitored over the next five years. However, several trees have significant hollows or fungal infections that compromise their structural integrity.
Tree Assessment Outcomes (Overview)
203 trees assessed by a qualified arborist
193 trees are currently healthy or manageable through standard pruning and maintenance practices
Council is committed to retaining trees wherever safe and possible
10 treeshave been identified with critical defects (such as fungal decay and trunk cavities), posing an unacceptable risk to the community
Pruning and other management practices are no longer viable for these 10 trees. The structural integrity is compromised to a point where removal is the only safe and acceptable option for the community.
Looking Ahead
Council is committed to replanting the same or similar species of trees as those being removed, where suitable along streetscapes. Replacement planting will help maintain the look and feel of the town, ensuring future generations can continue to enjoy Tenterfield’s iconic streetscapes.
Additional trees have also been identified as likely reaching their Safe & Useful Life Expectancy (SULE) within the next 5–15 years. These trees will continue to be actively monitored. Our goal is to extend their safe lifespan as long as possible through active care and regular re-assessment by a qualified arborist.
Balancing Safety and Character
Council is acting immediately to protect the community from identified risks. We remain equally committed to preserving Tenterfield’s leafy identity for the next 50–100 years.
The 10 trees classified as an immediate risk will be removed to ensure public safety. These will be replaced with the same or similar species (to be determined per site), maintaining our town’s famous autumn colour and streetscape character.
