Asbestos Removal

Disposal of asbestos waste

 

Council has strict conditions for the acceptance of asbestos waste at the Tenterfield Waste Transfer Station and Boonoo Boonoo Landfill.  It is essential customers follow directions before and during disposal to avoid asbestos exposure to themselves, staff and other people.

 

Please note asbestos waste is not accepted at any other Transfer Station in the Council area (Drake, Legume, Liston, Torrington or Urbenville).

 

 Conditions of entry and disposal

To dispose of asbestos waste at Tenterfield Waste Management Facilities, the following conditions must be met:

 

For asbestos quantities less than 1 cubic metre – Tenterfield Waste Transfer Station:

    • Asbestos Removal Kit (hazibag) available for prior purchase at Tenterfield Waste Transfer Station and allows for safe disposal of small quantities of asbestos
    • Asbestos waste must be double-wrapped in builders plastic and secured with strong tape
    • On arrival at the facility, you must follow the directions of staff.

 

Operational Hours for disposal of quantities less than 1 cubic metre at Tenterfield Waste Transfer Station for asbestos are;

    • Mon, Wed, Thurs, Fri, Sat, Sun
    • 10:00am to 12 noon or 2:00pm to 4:45pm – during Eastern Standard Time (Winter)
    • 10:00am to 12 noon or 3:00pm to 5:45pm – during Daylight Saving Time (Summer)
    • Not on Tuesdays or public holidays

 

For asbestos quantities greater than 1 cubic metre – Boonoo Boonoo Landfill:

    • Bookings for disposal must be made 48 hours prior to entry
    • You must arrive on time for your appointment; late arrivals will require rebooking
    • Asbestos waste must be double-wrapped in builders plastic and secured with strong tape
    • On arrival at the facility, you must follow the directions of staff.
    • Ensure compliance with the NSW EPA’s WasteLocate tracking requirements (refer to NSW EPA web page http://www.epa.nsw.gov.au/wasteregulation/wastelocate-asbestos.htm)

 

The following is not permitted

  • Delivery of asbestos which is unwrapped or otherwise improperly presented
  • Unloading asbestos in a manner which may break open the plastic wrapping
  • Tipping asbestos from the back of your vehicle
  • Not following the directions of staff.

 

How to book in asbestos waste for disposal

Asbestos waste is accepted by appointment only

  • To make a booking for asbestos waste disposal at Boonoo Boonoo Landfill, please phone (02) 6736 6000 at least 48 hours in advance
  • You will need to supply your name, address, phone number, date of disposal and approximately how much asbestos waste you have for disposal.

 

Fees and Charges for asbestos waste disposal

Fees for the disposal of asbestos waste are available on Council’s website at Fees and Charges Report Final (nsw.gov.au)

 

Penalties may apply

If the conditions outlined on this webpage are not followed for the disposal of asbestos waste at the Tenterfield Waste Management Facilities, you may be in breach of the NSW Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997 and Protection of the Environment Operations (Waste) Regulation 2014 and could be liable for penalties.
