A Message from the Mayor

Caring for our iconic Pin Oaks

Tenterfield’s iconic Pin Oaks are much more than trees. They sit at the heart of our town’s identity, drawing visitors from near and far, putting on a beautiful display of autumn colour each year, and shaping what makes our town feel like home.
These trees have been part of our streetscape for 90 years or more. While they have served the community well for generations, natural ageing, drought and storm damage, restricted growing spaces, and disease mean some are now in significant decline. In a small number of cases, this creates real risks for pedestrians, vehicles, nearby property and infrastructure.
The findings from recent assessments confirm that most trees can be retained and managed through ongoing care, monitoring and maintenance over the coming years. However, ten trees are in irreversible decline and, following arborist advice, have been recommended for removal.
I understand the strong connection our community has with our heritage trees and appreciate that the prospect of removing any of them is difficult. These matters are considered carefully, with full awareness of their importance to the community.
While these decisions are difficult, Council has a responsibility to act on expert advice and ensure our public spaces remain safe, while remaining firmly committed to preserving the character of Tenterfield’s legacy streetscapes.
Managing our trees is not only about addressing current risks. It is about caring for something our community values deeply. Where appropriate, removals will be followed by replanting at each site. This work keeps people safe today while ensuring our tree-lined streets can continue to be enjoyed by locals and visitors well into the future.
Council has already purchased 54 advanced Pin Oaks and will commence replacement planting along Casino Road and Logan Street. We are also exploring opportunities to establish new avenues in suitable locations, ensuring future generations can continue to enjoy the character, shade and famous autumn colours that define Tenterfield.
Thank you to everyone who continues to care about the future of these much-loved trees. With shared commitment, we can ensure Tenterfield’s iconic Pin Oaks remain a defining feature of our community for generations to come.
Mayor Bronwyn Petrie
