Volunteer at the Tenterfield Railway Museum

Email: tenterfieldrailwaymuseum@outlook.com.au Do you have a few hours to spare and an interest in Tenterfield’s history, tourism or community? The Tenterfield Railway Museum is looking for new volunteers to join its team and help keep this much-loved local attraction open to visitors. The museum is operated by volunteers and is currently experiencing a shortage of people available to cover the shifts needed to operate five days a week. Even a small regular commitment can make a big difference.

What could I do?

The museum is primarily looking for volunteers who can help with:
  • Opening and closing the museum
  • Welcoming visitors and answering questions
  • Manning the museum entrance
  • Operating the souvenir shop
  • Helping with general visitor assistance (no railway knowledge/experience required)
Volunteers are generally asked to commit to a minimum three-hour shift, once or twice a week. There are also opportunities for people who would like to learn more about the museum’s maintenance, restoration and preservation projects. You don’t need to be a railway expert. If you have an interest in local history, enjoy meeting people or simply want to contribute to the community, the museum would love to hear from you.

Be part of Tenterfield’s visitor experience and help preserve our railway history

The Tenterfield Railway Museum is housed in the historic railway station, which opened in 1886 and was once known as the Great Northern Terminus. The station and its collection help tell the story of the railway connection between Sydney and Brisbane and Tenterfield’s place in that history. The museum is promoted as a Tenterfield visitor attraction through NSW tourism channels, and the Railway Markets also bring visitors to the historic site throughout the year. By volunteering, you can help preserve this important part of Tenterfield’s heritage while playing a direct role in welcoming visitors to our community.
